Advancing the science of addiction treatment to improve recovery and well-being
The Tennessee Recovery and Effective Addiction Treatment (TREAT) Lab, housed within the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences, conducts research to better understand how and why psychological treatments work for individuals with gambling disorder and substance use disorders. Through rigorous clinical research, innovation, and collaboration, we aim to optimize the effectiveness of and expand access to evidence-based care for individuals, families, and communities affected by addiction.
Our Mission
Our mission is to advance understanding of the outcomes and processes of psychological treatments and to optimize the effectiveness of treatment for individuals with addictive disorders. We seek to generate knowledge that informs clinical practice, supports long-term recovery, and improves the quality, accessibility, and implementation of evidence-based treatment.
What We Study
The TREAT Lab focuses on research questions such as:
- How do psychological treatments produce both immediate and lasting change?
- Which treatment approaches work best, for whom, and under what circumstances?
- What therapeutic processes drive successful treatment outcomes?
- How can evidence-based treatments be refined to improve engagement and outcomes?
- What individual, social, and clinical factors influence treatment outcomes?
